Finding Harper

As I neared the bottom of the steps to the second level, I saw Torr’s guard standing at the entrance below. Knowing that he wouldn’t allow me to leave without an escort, I hoped to find Harper inside of his dorm.

I turned around and walked toward Harper’s room. I had seen him enter there a few times after class. As I stood in front of the door, I took in a deep breath and slowly let it out before knocking. A few nervous moments went by until I saw the door swing open. I expected to see Harper, but instead, it was Austin Quail from my journalism class. His beefy body was covered only with a loose fitting tank top. Hair collected in patches all over his chest as he stared awkwardly down at me.

“Conner?” Austin asked. “What’s going on?”

“Hey, Austin,” I said softly. “You know, I was looking for Harper and thought that this was his room.”

“It is!” Austin exclaimed. “He’s my dorm mate.” This news startled me.

“You and Harper room together?”

“Incredibly odd, right? Come in, man!”

I walked inside to see a room seemingly cut in half. One side was neat with a perfectly folded comforter. It appeared to be Harper’s as he had a collection of academic achievement plaques hanging from the wall. Austin’s side was much messier with an unkempt bedspread, plates of old food, and textbooks sprawled about the place.

“I had no idea that you roomed with Harper,” I said.

“Yeah, but he’s moving out next semester,” Austin grumbled. “Evidently I’m too messy for him. Suits me just fine though; don’t say anything, but that kid is a little weird.”

“Only a little?” I asked sarcastically.

“So you know, then?” Austin huffed as he pulled some books together from his bed. “Sorry, I was studying and my side of the room is a mess. One time, I had a pencil roll onto Harper’s side, and he had a conniption. I literally thought that his head was going to explode off of his neck.”

“I believe it,” I laughed. “Have you happened to see him at all?”

“He just left,” Austin explained. “He seems to keep a pretty tight schedule. However, he came home about thirty minutes ago, looking rather dirty and confused. I think he’s been sneaking off to the woods for his journalism paper. I finished mine about a week ago, but he’s been working hard on his. Why do you need to find him?”

“Uh…” I didn’t know what to tell Austin, but the truth seemed to be the most logical explanation at that point. Though I knew I couldn’t tell him all of it, I decided on the best part. “I saw him wandering out of the woods today and was just worried.”

“I always had the idea that you two hated each other.”

“Hate’s a strong word,” I said, though I was sure there was still potential for me to have intense, negative feelings about Harper.

“True that!” Austin exclaimed. “Anyway, I think that he might have gone to a bar.
